Alhaji Kabiru Usman
Education Secretary
Kabir Usman was sworn in as the 7th Secretary for Education, Federal Capital Territory Administration, by the Hon. Minister of the FCT, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed on Monday, 15th August 2011.
He was born on the 12th of May 1957 in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi state. He began his academic career in 1964 at the Makerar Gandu Primary School, Birnin kebbi where he got his first school Leaving Certificate in 1971. He then proceeded to the Government Secondary School, Farfaru, Sokoto from 1971 to 1975 from where he was admitted to the Advanced Teachers’ College Zaria where he obtained his NCE certificate in Mathematics and Geography in 1978.
In 1980, Kabir Usman was admitted to the University of IIorin from where he graduated with a Bachelor of Education Degree in Guidance and Counselling. In 1985, he acquired his Master’s Degree also in Guidance and Counselling from the University of Ibadan.
A highly experienced and thoroughbred educationist, Kabir Usman began his working career as a classroom teacher at the Mbube East Secondary School, Oboso, CrossRiver State in 1978 during his mandatory National Youth Service.
From 1079 to 1980 he taught at the Sultan Attahiru Secondary School Sokoto. He was Senior Education Officer and the pioneer head of Guidance and Counselling Unit of the Ministry of Eduaction Sokoto from 1983 to 1985. Between 1985 and 1986, he was the Senior Assistant Registrar and Academic Secretary of the Sokoto State College of Arts and Science, Sokoto from where he became the Principal Assistant Registrar till 1989.
He was appointed Secretary, Ministerial task Force for the take-off of the Federal College of Education (Technical) Gusau in 1989. He acted as the Registrar of that institution until he retired in 1993.
Between 1989 and 1993, he held several positions of responsibility at the FCE (Technical) Gusau which included Secretary, Governing Council, Secretary Minor Works Committee and Chairman, Staff Welfare Committee amongst several others. After several years of meritorious public service, Kabir Usman went into private business. He became an accomplished farmer and printer amongst other business concerns.
His desire to serve his community and the country as a whole prompted him to join the people’s Democratic Party (PDP) where he served meritoriously in several capacities including Special Adviser, he was one of only six on the Executive Council of Kebbi State.
In September 2010, he resigned his appointment as special adviser in order to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives. He however withdrew his candidature in January 2011.
In the PDP, he worked assiduously for the success of the party in the 2011 general elections and served amongst others as a member of the PDP Electoral Panel in Plateau and Kwara states where he oversaw the election primaries at which the current governors of both states emerged.
He was supervisor, Revalidation/Registration Exercise in Edo state and also served on the 2011 Presidential Campaign Council as a member representing kebbi state.
He returned to his private businesses after the 2011 general elections until his appointment as secretary for Education, FCTA in August 2011.
Kabir Usman is married with children.
